It's coming up to 4 years now since I started with Linux Mint, and I am still hooked on this particular distro. In fact I have installed it on my wife's laptop. This is her very first computer and she has never known another OS.

When the user interface is different and the API for developers is different, is an operating system still Linux, or is it something else?

When I say Linux, I mean Google’s Android and Chrome operating systems as well because they are all based on Linux.

As a long time Linux Mint user, 19 months and counting. Almost as long as the distro has been around. And Ubuntu and Suse before that, I find it difficult to understand why people stick with XP and have Vista thrust upon them. Then I return from the Matrix and realise that it's to do with advertising and apprehension, Linux doesn't get the exposure it deserves and when people are exposed to it some grasp it with both hands and jump up and down and shout "cool" and "gimme gimme", while others are fearful of taking the next step and put up barriers like "how do I get on the net" and "can I do MSN" as if the web couldn't exist without Microsoft. Office workers that think Microsoft Office and Outlook Express are the be all and end all of productivity, and you need Adobe Photoshop Elements to manipulate digital photo's. Personally I'm not all that arsed as to whether Linux is ready for the desktop or not but if I was, and I wanted to have a bite of that particular cash cow and ride on the gravy train then I would be out there with a pretty comprehensive advertising campaign. Which brings me to my observation, and that is, are the Open Source Community really taking this "Linux" thing seriously or is it just a hobby!

Well seeing as every Fu#@er and his/her Mother is going to have an opinion on this one, here's mine.

OLPC embraces XP.

Some Open Source Evangelists may be wringing there hands and bemoaning the plight of the OLPC after Nicholas Negroponte revealed that the device is to be made available sporting the Windows XP OS. But I say, it's not about Linux giving Windows a good thrashing. The bigger picture is getting the Technology into the hands of third world children.

Question:- Why do people persist in using pirated copies of Microsoft Office, just so they can run Word and Exel when there are real free alternatives out there like IBM's Lotus Symphony and Openoffice.org's Open Office.
